Description

C Joynes - Congo

Continuing further into the territories of domesticated English voudou sketched out by 2009's 'Revenants, Prodigies & The Restless Dead', ‘Congo’ is dominated by notions of landscape, imagination and personal ritual. However, while elements of introspection and intensity do appear, the mood is one of simple uplifting joy. Warm woody sounds and themes for a variety of donated, rescued and homemade instruments contrast with occasional stark arrangements, bursts of
blossoming electricity, and passages of dense improvisation. Contributions from friends and colleagues generate
momentum and interplay at key points, enabling these recordings to site the loner aesthetic within the traditions of Social Music for dancing and communion.
Featuring The Marsh Arabs: Patrick Farmer (perc); Dominic Lash (bs); Simon Loynes (Tarang, Phin, Khaen); Richard
Partridge (v, viola, bs). Voice of the Corn: Hanna Tuulikki; Ben Reynolds.

Reviews

Whenever I’ve seen Cambridge’s Chris Joynes perform, he’s been proffering low-key but technically masterful acoustic guitar pieces firmly placed in the Fahey/Basho/Takoma school of soft knocks. On Congo, he has convened a group called The Marsh Arabs – Patrick Farmer on drums/percussion, Dominic Lash on double bass, Richard Partridge on violin, viola and bass and (presumably a brother) Simon Joynes on tarang, phin and khaen.

Joynes is no folk purist, and has been known to collaborate with fellow Cantabrigian beat pulverisers Pete UM and Doozer in his time. In this regard I find it helpful to think of him as an inheritor to Davy Graham, a lone operator prone to unexpected collaborations and with a repertoire that crossed continents and timezones with consummate ease, dashed off with a phenomenal, yet lightly applied technique.

And so it is here. Even when harvesting similar Third and Fourth World vibrations to Sir Richard Bishop and the Sublime Freqs crew, Joynes personalises them, as on the last two tracks, reinterpretations of Ravi Shankar’s soundtracks for Satyajit Ray’s Apu trilogy which veer into faux-Country territory. An earlier piece like “The Running Board (Thanet To Dogon)” joins hitherto unseen dots between Estuary Essex and darkest Africa. “And The Moon Was Full And Round” pummels a sourdough Tony Conrad/ Henry Flynt viola drone, while the drunken plucks and darkling bass-bowing of “Ghosts Of The Field” paints a Samuel Palmer-esque image of a collapsing old building under sickle moonlight.

On Congo you can sense Joynes paying off his debts to the Takoma school and finding a distinctive voice, composing autobiographical songs-without-words in an idiom somewhere between folk, Improv and pastoral ethno-forgery. In the annotation to “Joseph In The Sea Of Corn”, he simply writes: “Fenland summer, c 2004; science fiction art compendium c 1986; LSD c 1991.” And if that ain’t a perfect recipe for a tune in these benighted times, I don’t know what is.
