When Rectangles Roll Under Cities

Eschewing conventional song structures while retaining his pop sensibilities, anderegg presents a debut album both beautiful and engaging. The sounds themselves reference the familiar, evoking a sense of environmental space and structure. At times flirting with melody, the tracks imply a sense of song, which both draws the listener in, while giving room for interpretation. Moments and gestures fracture and decay, while subtle contrasts hint at the concrete.

Brendon Anderegg's When Rectangles Roll Under Cities is a much denser affair, thick with the noise of train stations, the complaints of machinery and the din of dreams. But there are also tinklings of jazz and the tunings of rock bands about to take the stage. If Anderegg's album has a precedent it's in the swirling anti-melodics of Rune Grammofon, a sound at once chaotic and almost amniotically soothing. "The Second Precedes The First" sprawls out for 14 minutes, and "When Rectangles Roll Under cities" runs 23. In Both, Anderegg proves himself a master transverser of musique concrete's narrow ridge between representation and pure sound. -- Philip Sherburne

Anderegg's ambient glitch album is a gentle affair; with ghosts of melody hovering in the distance, though other moments are reminiscent of being inside a tent during a hailstorm. Like a procession of ice sculptures, this is a nicely manipulated but narrow palette of sounds. -- Clive Bell
