Clair Obscur - We Gave a Party for the Gods and the Gods all Came
This album from this cult French act is a nice surprise since apart from several re-releases and live albums we had not heard anything new from them for quite a long time now (more than ten years). This new release clearly is a good album and brings Clair Obscur back to the front of the avant-garde scene. Of course their music remain something very particular and unusual for the scene but it's also their trademark. From coldwave and industrial to orchestral and experimental, we get a collection of tracks that sounds like a compilation (some eighties sounding soundscapes here and there) but with a certain cohesion. There are two cover songs featured: a depressive and gloomy version of Joy Division's “Decade” and a more electronic cover of “Cry No More” (Poison Girls). Other noticeable tracks are the rather schizophrenic “It'll Be Allright”, the nice and gloomy “I Hope Your're Fine” or the funny “Mon Ami Mon Frère” (a techno bassline and 2nd degree French vocals). And since the band like to disturb, recycle and brings mystery, they also deliver new versions of two classical tracks from their early albums: the tense “The Last Encounter” and “Blume”.
