David Daniell - The Hideout

Completing the pair of new David Daniell live recordings on Antiopic, The Hideout offers an acoustic take on the guitarist's craft. However, just as its partnering release Los Jacintos had began with a flood of drone tones, so does this set, which despite its unplugged origins opens with a stuttering confluence of layered harmonies, gaining urgency towards the middle of the piece when noisier, more organ-like sonorities are stirred up. It's only really once we're a quarter hour in that Daniell's guitar begins to sound like a guitar, plucking Takoma-like ragas with a harp-like clarity through the second half of the piece, ending in a flurried, ecstatic crescendo. The Hideout is a performance in the Bad Timing mold: a stellar turn from Daniell, depicting a player whose folksy fingerpicking skills are matched by a roving experimental mindset. Recommended.
