Klangwart - Stadtlandfluss Live

Since 1999, Klangwart (Markus Detmer and Timo Reuber) have been
experimenting at their concerts with a limited pool of sounds and loops
(developed and compiled by Timo). From this, the two generate the
concert piece "Stadtlandfluss" in real time, which they have been
(re-)creating as a continuous experiment for many years.

Thus "Stadtlandfluss" is a "work in progress". Little of what's
happening within the piece is determined. Dynamics range from "very
quiet" (minimal, subtle, harmonious, finely honed) to "extremely loud"
(harsh, raw, pure energy). The piece is in a state of permanent flux, it
changes from performance to performance – depending on the acoustics of
the place, the physical and mental state of Klangwart and the audience.
No two concerts sound the same.

The album contains two live versions (Beijing, Vienna) of the studio
album "Stadtlandfluss" by Klangwart which was originally released on
Staubgold in 2008 (staubgold 80 CD/LP).

Reviews

"An alternative route to euphoria."
(David Stubbs, The Wire)

Cologne ambient veterans Klangwart take their 2008 album Stadtlandfluss on the road with this new live long-player, offering two separate sets, one from a performance in Vienna, the other from a show in Beijing. The Viennese set spends its first few minutes making very little noise indeed, subtly spinning wispy drones right up until a glitchy network of stuttering clacks fires up, sounding like some sort of misfiring telecommunications equipment. As the sonic density heightens, fragments of speech and radio broadcast jolt around and gamelan-like percussion starts to sound off. It's in the piece's final ten minutes or so that things start to become more turbulent, with what sounds like speeded-up string samples dissolving into motorised, buzzing drone before a few loose signals dissipate to reveal a whispered female voice. Although the Beijing version would seem to be based on the same material the tone tends to be noisier and less guarded. Here the processed vocals come to the forefront more readily and the processed string crescendo towards the end takes on a frenzied, ecstatic quality. Good stuff.
(Boomkat)

"This is an astonishing LP; full of bravura, wit and some ear-shaking
atonal, ambient noise. I can't get enough of it."
(Richard Foster, Incendiary Mag)
