Rafael Toral - Space Elements Vol. I
Returning to his R&D-focused series of electronic experiments (given the umbrella title Space Program) Rafael Toral initiates a new sub-strand, under the banner of Space Elements, designed as a showcase for dissections of individual, custom-made instruments and collaborative works. On this occasion Toral teams up with a cellist, a percussionist, a double-nbassist and trumpeter, with David Toop lending a hand on flute along the way. You'd be fairly hard-pressed to recognise these instruments however, as they're all performed with a freedom from their conventional timbral identities. Consequently we get strange blips, bloops and rasps on 'I.iii' and coarse sawing textures on the almost digeridoo-like groan of 'I.vii'. Toral himself calls this "post-free jazz electronic music", but however you choose to brand it, this is absorbing and challenging stuff from the get-go.
