Aero - Rises & Falls
Week three of our Apestaartje feature brings us the amazing 2003 sophomore albums from Mountains members and joint label founders Koen Holtkamp aka Aero and Brendon Anderegg. Aero's 'Rises & Falls', over a year in the making - 7 tracks 40 mins, starts with a simply astonishing track called 'Rises' featuring Anderegg on banjo and guitar. This track starts out with slightly minimalist bluegrass banjo jam, an intoxicating blurring of notes that suddenly merge with a mid to high register drone made from the lingering tones emitted from the higher reaches of the banjo. After the banjo time changes to a blues walk it stops to let an enormous bass drone take over with the slow sweeping guitar tones - a jaw dropping 11 minute journey through sound. 'Falls' continues the gorgeous altered guitar melodies of the first piece adding dynamic oscillating resonance that will fill your head with sound without jarring for one second. 'Coast' starts with a rushing torrent of micro noise mixed with nature, it could easily be the altered sounds of the sea crashing into rocks or small fireworks let off by King Tubby, thought by the title the latter seems a fair bet. After this hair raising intro the sweet noise dies away leaving a supreme bass heavy mid frequency drone, tingling with life. In the mix you can just make a noise akin to a breeze rustling through parched bushes, simply a beautiful realization or electronic meets organic music. 'Aug31' is another lovely drone piece, withdrawn altered rustic tones breaking through to the light of day and the final track 'After' brings this wonderful album to a close with an almost orchestral/ambient variation on the classic era of Chain Reaction. As before sadly this CD is very limited for now, be quick now or hang around for the pending restock of all available Apestaartje back catalogue. Highly recommended. Boomkat
