Matt Rösner - Repeat

After a couple of releases on some of the most interesting labels dedicated to environmental and electronic sound, in Australia and the US, Matt Rösner reappears at the UK's 12X50 RECORDINGS rooster with a lavish publication on the MIATERA imprint.

REPEAT despite the album title's connotation, of presenting something again, regurgitatingly or something that could be considered as a progression from what was already released on 12X50's Carbon Series, this vinyl publication offers a group of compositions, that perform a giant leap, demonstrating the musical evolution of its creator.

The music on this album was inspired by Matt Rösner's environment in Western Australia as before, but here the composer reflects on the oceanic movements and life on the coastal west of his continent. He engages with the sound of voice, recorded instruments and performers.

Some additional tones and textures were provide by Adam Trainer, Greg Taw and Alexander Wendt but all very sparingly.

The work of Morton Feldman comes to mind and Rösner reveals that observations of life forms, textures and patterns have influenced the compositional process too, in fact the Fibbonacci series layed out timing and structure of the entire B-Side of the album, where the particularly rewarding track Lattices explores tones and frequencies over a 20 min composition.

This excellent release captures time and place for contemplation - a concept that Anne Berndt's sleeve photo equally reflects upon.
