David Fennessy - PPP
Irish composer David Fennessy perhaps sits most squarely in the composed and orchestral realms of contemporary music, although he is an accomplished electric guitarist and makes use of electronics and non-orchestral acoustic instruments. Born in 1976, Fennessy began his musical studies at the DIT Conservatory of Music in Dublin, later moving to Glasgow to study under Scottish uber-composer James MacMilllan.
Fennessy's works have been performed across the world by players including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Hebrides ensemble, the Zephyr Quartet (Netherlands), Synchronia (USA) and Trio Gragnani (Australia). He has received commissions from RTE Lyric FM, Music Network, and Concorde amongst others.
Of his music, Fennessy himself says "I’m not sure if there is a consistent line of inquiry running through my work. Each piece is its own little universe with its own technique, language, rules, problems and solutions.”
Of late this has meant excursions into more live electronics-based territory, using for example feedback from timpani and other percussive objects.
