Christine Odlund - Phenomena
These methodical, academic electroacoustic drones from Stockholm's Christine Odlund are destined not only to appeal to lovers of electronic music's more conservative, pensive side, but anyone who relishes a bit of prime dark ambience is likely to find rewards in the booming tonal sculptures of 'Mycelium Of A Lawyers Wig' and 'Thought Form'. Beyond these subatomic drones there's a good understanding of concrete sound laid out on 'Magnetosphere', which resounds with immaculately hi-def acousmatic detail. 'Forest' follows up on this wonderfully well, offering up squelchy field recording timbres and mysterious, bloopy electronic intervals. After 'Troglodyte's comparatively lightweight choral synthesis, the album gets right back on track with the gloriously creepy 'Lightning & Voices', whose mixture of real-world textures and processed ambience faintly recalls Carsten Nicolai's Xerrox output... but with added thunderclaps. Excellent.
