Chartreuse - No More Paths to Sounder Sleep
On the debut release from Chartreuse, guitar melodies are weighed down by the murky and melancholic bliss of strings and loops swarming the headphones.
The organ drones seep through the earth as if heard by a tape recorder buried underground. No More Paths to Sounder Sleep is a trance-inducing soundtrack to the end of the night. Drew Smith comes from a punk/thrash-metal pedigree, having drummed for multiple Athens, Georgia bands. While still involved in loud and chaotic music (his recently-formed Chrissakes pays nice tribute to Shellac), Smith’s Chartreuse came as a result of finding a different way to be heavy.
Reviews
Early demos showed an affinity for Fripp & Eno’s legendary collaborations, but now on No More Paths, Chartreuse puts more of a plodding pulse to its base, drenched in earthy tones and heart-breaking melodies beautifully mastered by Shelby Cinca - Frodus.
No More Paths to Sounder Sleep is glorious–the home of epic drone and soundscapes that accompany every high in life… It’s the delivery of such high-end product that separates No More Paths from its predecessors. - Electronic Voice Phenomenon
