Spring Heel Jack - Mass
Renowned London-based experimentalists Spring Heel jack teamed up with leading organist Kevin Bowyer and free-jazz percussionists Tony Marsh and Mark Saunders for this new recording. The title, Mass, is probably an acknowledgment of the recording surroundings for the project; the piece was performed and documented in a Glaswegian chapel, combining sinister electronic manipulations, with downright terrifying drum excursions and horror movie organ drones. The tone switches between frenzied pandemonium to eerie, foley-like incidental noises, leaving you with an hour of unclassifiable, adventurous music that really doesn't seem compatible with the supposed serenity of a church setting.
