Luc Ferrari - Madame de Shanghai
The great Luc Ferrari was commissioned by the Seven Things label to create a brand new work, though sadly he was unable to complete it before his death in August 2005. The label instead decided to release its own re-recording of a late-period tape/instrumental work, based on themes and ideas set out in Orson Welles' The Lady From Shanghai. This composition is made up from field recordings of a CHinese girl searching for a copy of the aforementioned Welles movie on video around various locations in Paris. The Scottish Flute Trio intersperse these episodes with compellingly dissonant woodwind themes based around F flat, incorporating excerpts from Welles' own speech at the very end. A beguiling and suspenseful work, and tremendously immersive to boot.
