If a journey through the vast LAFMS ten-CD box set, Lowest Form of Life, on RRR proves to be grueling for newcomers to the free improvisation, noise, and avant rock collective, this CD is an excellent compendium of highlights extracted from the box set, along with some material from elsewhere and a pair of previously unreleased experiments thrown in as a bonus. The obscure collective known as the Los Angeles Free Music Society existed over three decades beginning in the early '70s. An umbrella project for the works of numerous avant-garde experimentalists from the City of Angels, included here are pieces by the Doo-Dooettes, Le Forte Four, C.V. Massage, Smegma, Tom Recchion, Seldom Melodic Ensemble, Rick Potts, Foundation Boo, Fredrik Nilson, and Joe Potts.
